When Paul wrote those words to the Galatians, he was explaining the depth of desire God has for us to experience real freedom in our lives.  Freedom from sin.  Freedom from shame. Freedom from condemnation. Freedom from any sort of bondage that might limit His fullness in our lives.  Jesus died for the purpose of us experiencing complete and total freedom from sin, death, hell and the grave.  He was the final sacrifice, once and for all, to break the curse over us in this world.  Because of the price paid by Jesus we can experience the fullness of everything that God planned for us, prior to the fall in Genesis chapter 3.  We are no longer under the curse of sin.  We are no longer under the curse of the law.  We are now completely free, because of Jesus.  

Jesus explained to those who believed in John chapter 8, that "if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free." Jesus is explaining to new believers that they would need to abide - to dwell, to remain, to last in his word, and that if they did, they would be made free.  This is the process by which freedom happens.  This is a process of unlearning the old ways and learning the new ways of God and His kingdom.  The practice of habitually studying, reading, learning and meditating on His word is where our freedom will happen.
